Winner of scholarship for Black/African Canadian student-athlete awarded

Dalhousie University’s Department of Athletics and Recreation is pleased to announce the establishment of the Kinduct Student-Athlete Entrance Scholarship. Sponsored by Dr. Travis McDonough (BScK’94), the founder and CEO of Kinduct, this new scholarship will be presented annually to an incoming first-year varsity student-athlete enrolled at Dalhousie’s who identifies as a Black/African Canadian.

Nginyu Ngala, who will play on the men’s basketball team, has been named the inaugural recipient.  Nginyu is from Montreal, QC and will be pursuing a major in management while at Dalhousie.

“We’re honoured to award our inaugural scholarship to Nginyu as he exemplifies what being a student-athlete is all about. He’s hard working, a leader, and cares deeply about his community. We are all very excited to see where his potential takes him at Dalhousie, a school of integrity that fosters an environment of both acceptance and empowerment,” said Dr. Travis McDonough.”

A point guard, Ngala has played the last three seasons with a dominant Vanier College in Montreal. Ngala and his Vanier teammates went undefeated in the 2018-19 season – the first team to do so in the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) in the last 15 years. They finished the year with a provincial championship title, with Ngala being named the MVP of the provincial finals as well as earning a first team all-star nod and team MVP honours.

“I’m very honoured to be the first recipient of the Kinduct Student-Athlete Entrance Scholarship,” says Ngala. “It’s opportunities like these that help student-athletes succeed both on and off the court and help prepare us for success in our future careers.”

The Kinduct Student-Athlete Entrance Scholarship is another addition to the partnership between Dalhousie and Kinduct. In 2015, the Tigers began using Kinduct’s Athlete Management System (AMS) to enhance and streamline the strength and conditioning program of its student-athletes. The AMS is focused on consolidating data, mitigating the risk of injury, and maximizing athletic performance with a suite of athlete management tools and content. Nginyu and his teammates will be leveraging the platform during the upcoming season.

“Our partnership with Kinduct and relationship with Dr. Travis McDonough continues to deliver outstanding benefits to Dalhousie and our athletic community. This scholarship is a result of two organizations committed to helping drive important change through education and sport.” said Tim Maloney, Executive Director of Athletics & Recreation at Dalhousie. “This initiative is another example of Travis’s leadership, vision and generosity which will have a lasting impact on our community.”

In 2016, the partnership expanded to include Dalhousie’s School of Health and Human Performance to create the Intern Performance Coaches (IPCs) Program. The IPC Program is designed to educate students on how to use and apply Kinduct’s Performance software in coaching and athlete management at an elite level. Using the software, IPCs help varsity coaches collect and visualize performance data, teach athletes how to upload entries and apply kinesiology knowledge when applicable. Each varsity team has one or two IPCs providing hands on experience for the students while furthering the strength and conditioning of our varsity student-athletes.
